Zeng Sanduo (曾三多)

Zeng Sanduo (曾三多1899-1964), formerly known as Li Shousheng, was born in Huiyang County, Guangdong. Lived in Malaysia when he was two years old. He lost his father at the age of 9, and came to learn Cantonese opera with his adoptive father, and signed a 6-year master-apprentice contract. A few years later, he practiced solid child skills, and soon took over the performance, changing his stage name to Zeng Sanduo曾三多. Later, he went to perform in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and worshiped wusheng Liu Jiangcong as his teacher. Zeng Sanduo returned to China in 1914. After that, he performed in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and other places. Co-produced the feature films "The History of the Red Ship" and "The Iceberg Fire Line" with Hu Die in Shanghai. From the age of 26 to 34, he participated in the "Da Luo Tian" troupe formed by Ma Shizeng and Chen Feiyi in Hong Kong as Zhengyin Wusheng, and later formed the "Big Boy" class with Xin Liang. Later, he co-wrote and performed the Cantonese opera "Dangerous City Plaice" with the famous actress Chen Feinong, making an exception and performing the painted face, creating a precedent for the martial arts student in Cantonese opera to open his face. In 1936, his family moved to Hong Kong, and formed the "Xing Zhonghua" class with Bai Yutang and Lin Chaoqun. During this period, he performed several plays of "Burning Efang Palace", in which he played the role of Qin Shihuang. In martial arts performances, Zeng Sanduo used Shaolin red boxing, with a dignified and free posture, and he was good at using concise and accurate movements to express the rich thoughts, feelings and characteristics of the characters. Playing painted face is also unique, his claw hands are well-known far and wide. The various roles he played make people feel the profound artistic attainments, and he enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. From 1937 to 1942, he performed in the United States. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as art director and youth training class director of Guangdong Cantonese Theater, deputy director of Guangzhou Opera Reform Committee, and director of Guangzhou Branch of China Theater Association. Zeng Sanduo is kind, honest and noble. He is good at martial arts performances, and his representative works include "Drunken Riding a Donkey". In 1952, he won the individual award for his performance in the drama "Being Loyalty".
