Jimmy Wang 王羽

Wang Yu (Jimmy Wang 王羽, March 28, 1943 - April 5, 2022), formerly known as Wang Zhengquan, was a Taiwanese actor, director, and screenwriter. He was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province and was born in Shanghai in 1943. In his early days, he mainly worked as a martial arts actor in Hong Kong. He was a representative figure of the first generation of stars in the process of director Chang Cheh creating a new wave of martial arts. Wang Yu learned karate and Tai Chi when he was young. In 1963, he joined Shaw Brothers in Hong Kong and made his debut as a martial arts actor. In 1967, he was favored by Shaw Brothers director Chang Cheh and became a hit after filming "The One-Armed Sword". Before Bruce Lee became popular, Wang Yu was the highest-paid martial arts actor in the Hong Kong film industry. In 1971, he switched to Golden Harvest, and his first film was "The One-Armed Swordsman vs. the Blind Man", for which he also went to court with Shaw Brothers. In addition to being an actor, Wang Yu also directed several films, including the 1969 kung fu film "Dragon and Tiger Fight." In 1975, he left Jiahe and joined Luo Wei's independent production, performing "Wind and Rain and Two Meteors", "Into the Yellow Dragon", "One-Armed Boxing Champion" and so on. After Wang Yu retired from the film industry in the 1990s, he started doing business in Taiwan. In 2011, he appeared in Donnie Yen's "Martial Arts". In 2011, he co-founded the "Taipei Martial Arts Instructor Practitioners Professional Union" with Ke Junxiong, which has been in preparation for one year. Wang Yu is the first chairman of the union, and Ke Junxiong is the honorary director. According to reports, he suffered a minor stroke in 2011 due to overwork during filming and movie promotions. In December 2015, he suddenly suffered another stroke and fainted while preparing to return to Taiwan at the airport in Thailand. He underwent two emergency brain surgeries locally and has been admitted to the Chin Hsing Hospital since returning to Taiwan. There have been reports of critical illness several times. He died in the hospital in the early morning of April 5, 2022, at the age of 80.
