Poon Soo-king潘秀瓊
Poon Soo-king潘秀瓊 was born in Macau in 1935 and grew up in Malaya. She moved from Singapore to Hong Kong in the 1950s and worked as a behind-the-scenes singer in movies. She became famous after singing and recording "Lover's Tears" in 1958, and was known as the queen of bass songs. Her classic repertoire includes "Every Family Has a Scripture That Is Hard to Recite", "Circle of Daughters", "Love on the Solo River", "Little Kisses", "I Am a Thrush", "Why Others Are Matchmaking" and "Back to My Mother's Home" etc. Her singing career spans decades, and she spent most of her early years touring and performing abroad. Until 1982 and 1983, Pan Xiuqiong was invited by the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation to be responsible for the training of singing groups, which opened up a new field for her to teach singing. At that time, singers such as Xiao Chenghong, Ye Zhengwen, Qiao Feng, Bei Xinni, Chen Peter, etc. grew up under Sister Pan's training. Pan Xiuqiong is the next generation of alto singer after Bai Guang. One of the top five divas in the 1950s, following the top six divas in Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s. (Other 4: Gu Mei, Cui Ping, Jingting, Pan Dihua). In the early days, EMI Records was dominated by Hong Kong singers. The only foreign singer who could squeeze in and record music there for a long time was Poon Soo-king.
