Kwai Ming-Yeung桂名揚

Kwai Ming-Yeung桂名揚 was born on October 22, 1909 in Nanhai County, Guangdong Province. His ancestral home is Ningbo, Zhejiang. His original name is Gui Mingyang . He is a famous Cantonese opera actor. His father Gui Dongyuan and his uncle Gui Nanping were both so-called "Confucian scholars" in the late Qing Dynasty. Kwai Ming-Yeung began to learn opera at the age of 11. His master was the steward of the "Youtianying" class. Although he was not famous, he had rich knowledge of stage arts, so Kwai Ming-Yeung learned the basic skills extremely well. He is good at playing Xiaowu. After Ma Shizeng formed the "Da Luotian" class, he saw that Kwai Ming-Yeung was quite accomplished, so he used him as Xiaowu in the third gang. He is able to integrate the performing arts of Ma Shitseng and Xue Juexian into his own style, and is known as "Ma Xue Qiang". The power and demeanor of Zhao Zilong he played greatly surpassed that of Ma Shitsang. His performance is full of ups and downs, powerful and tight in rhythm. He created a routine called "gong edge knurling", which uses high-pitched gongs and drums music to match the body movements. It is refreshing and has become a commonly used entrance routine in Cantonese opera. In 1931, Kwai Ming-Yeung led the "Great China Male and Female Troupe" to perform in the United States, which was very popular. New York's Anliang Hall presented him with a 14-ounce gold medal with the four words "Famous all over the world" engraved on it, marking the beginning of Cantonese opera's reputation as a male actor in the United States. Be the first to receive a gold medal. "In 1932, when Kwai Ming-Yeung returned from America, he formed the "Sun Moon Star" class with Liao Xiahuai, Zeng Sanduo, and Chen Jintang. As soon as he appeared on the stage, he was praised by the audience. He performed in plays such as "The Burning of Epang Palace" and gained a high reputation. Some civil and military students such as Ren Jianhui, Mai Bingrong, Lu Yulang, Luo Jiabao, and Kwai Ming-Yeung's apprentices include Lu Haitian, Liang Yintang, Qi Xiaoying, etc., all learned from Kwai Ming-Yeung's performing arts. Kwai Ming-Yeung's apprenticeship The requirements are very strict, and Liang Yintang also studies and practices diligently. Kwai Ming-Yeung has been suffering from tuberculosis, heart disease, stomach problems, etc. for a long time. After moving to Guangzhou on October 26, 1957, the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe sent him to the hospital for recuperation in order to take care of his health. Kwai Ming-Yeung died of tuberculosis at the Guangdong Cadre Sanatorium at 9:45 pm on June 15, 1958, at the age of 49.
