Li Qinian(李绮年Lee Yi-Nin 1914 - November 4, 1950), formerly known as Li Chuqing, was a native of Guangdong Province and was a Cantonese opera actress and film actress active from the 1930s to the 1940s.
Participated in the Cantonese opera "Rejuvenation Song" for the first time at the age of 11;
In July 1938, she starred in the Cantonese opera "Diao Chan Worships the Moon", raising more than 4,000 Hong Kong dollars for the wounded soldiers and refugees of the Republic of China. On August 7, 1938, she was contracted by "Shaw Brothers" for three months, with a monthly salary of 2,000 Hong Kong dollars and 2,000 Wen Yuan (Singapore dollar), set off to more than 60 theaters in Nanyang (now Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei) to perform Cantonese opera: "Liang Hongyu", "Xi Shi", "Mulan", "Wang Zhaojun", "Diao Chan Worships the Moon" ”, “Zhuo Wenjun” and “Swallow Notes” etc.
In 1948, Li Qinian came back in Hong Kong and performed in films such as "Flowers Lining Horse Shoes" (1948). Unfortunately, she has lost her former glory.
Li Qinian's final film is "Selling Meat to Save My Aunt" (1949), in which she played the role of the good wife Yu Ruobing.
The more than 40 films that Li Qinian participated in in her lifetime were all black and white Cantonese and Mandarin sound films from Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Li Qinian left Hong Kong to perform in Vietnam on March 17, 1949. The first stop was Saigon Embankment. On the night of November 3, 1950, after Li Qinian performed the play "The Return of the Soul at Midnight" in Hai Phong, she was found unconscious at 1:30 a.m. on November 4, 1950 after taking a bottle of sleeping pills and was rushed to Hai Phong. Treatment at the Street Municipal Hospital was postponed until 8:30 pm on November 4, 1950, when she finally died at the age of 36. Since sleeping pills at that time were all barbiturates and were extremely risky, whether it was a drug accident or suicide has not been determined until now.
