该片由《荡妇心》班底马上再合作，以集体的高水准拍就一部华语电影经典。《荡妇心》营造农村社会的剥削，《血染海棠红》则是都市罪人的炼狱之旅，三奶奶终始不渝的邪恶，道德不容，三爷以犯罪消灭罪恶，法律所不容，都难免成为终身罪犯。该片不作明显的社会批判，运用美国黑色电影的特色，讲一段刺激的情仇传奇，铸造富于中国社会人性色彩的戏剧。白光散发永恒的诱惑，毫不脸红的坏，为中国银幕所罕见。三爷牺牲父亲的名份，寄望女儿有个正常的家，这中国人的伦理观，呼应影片拍摄时的乱世人心。 影片講述马三爷表面上是一名商人，实际上却是著名的飞天大盗海棠红。三爷的妻子三奶奶出身青楼，婚后一直过奢华的生活。三奶奶为三爷诞下女儿后三爷为孩子的前途想，决意改邪归正。三爷金盘洗手后，三奶奶无从再挥霍，于是与旧相好周青华搭上。某夜，三爷与三奶奶应邀到王军长家中出席宴会。宴会中，三奶奶竟偷去名伶白莲花的钻石手镯。三爷发现此事后，怒掴三奶奶，令她翌日早上将手镯交还物主。三奶奶老羞成怒，乘夜带同女儿，跑到青华家中暂避，并且插赃嫁祸三爷，暗中通知警察到家中将他捉拿。三爷跟踪三奶奶，来到青华的住所，跟青华大打出手，最后更将他刺死。事后，三爷携同女儿，来到好友刘大奎探长家中，将女儿交托刘夫人抚养，而自己则随大奎到警局自首。十多年后，三爷的女儿爱珠已长大成人，并且快要出嫁。此时，三奶奶却突然前来刘家，向大奎索取五十条黄金，否则将爱珠带走。大奎为了爱珠的幸福，宁愿卖掉房子筹钱。三爷得知此事后，不惜越狱找三奶奶算账。纠缠间，三奶奶失足堕楼身亡。三爷再次来到刘家，向大奎自首，但要求大奎让他出席爱珠的婚礼。最后，三爷在警方监视下目送女儿出嫁，老怀安慰，自愿随警察离去。 The film was produced by the team of "Slut Heart" and they worked together to create a Chinese film classic with a high collective level.
